Russia’s Invasion of Ukraine Exacerbates Hunger in Middle East, North Africa

The conflict in Ukraine is having a devastating impact on the global food supply, and the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region is particularly vulnerable. The region is already struggling with high food prices and food insecurity, and the war in Ukraine is exacerbating the problem.

Governments in the MENA region can take a number of steps to protect the right to food during this crisis:

  • Provide subsidies for essential food items. This will help to make food more affordable for people, especially those who are struggling to make ends meet.

  • Intervene to control prices. The government can set price ceilings on essential food items to prevent prices from spiraling out of control.

  • Provide social protection programs. This could include cash transfers, food stamps, or other programs that help people to afford food.

  • Increase humanitarian assistance. The government can provide food aid to people who are most in need.

  • Work with international institutions. The government can work with the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) and other international organizations to get help for people who are affected by the food crisis.

Here are some specific examples of how governments in the MENA region are taking steps to protect the right to food:

  • Lebanon: The Lebanese government has announced that it will provide subsidies for wheat and other essential food items. The government is also working with the WFP to provide food aid to people who are most in need.

  • Egypt: The Egyptian government has announced that it will increase the amount of money it spends on food subsidies. The government is also working to diversify its sources of wheat imports, so that it is not so reliant on Ukraine and Russia.

  • Yemen: The Yemeni government, with the help of the WFP, is providing food aid to millions of people who are affected by the conflict in Yemen. The government is also working to improve agricultural production in Yemen.

It is important to note that there is no one-size-fits-all solution to the food crisis in the MENA region. The best approach will vary depending on the specific circumstances of each country. However, the steps outlined above can provide a starting point for governments in the region to take action to protect the right to food.

In addition to the steps outlined above, it is also important for governments in the MENA region to address the long-term root causes of food insecurity in the region. This includes investing in agriculture, improving social protection systems, and reducing inequality.

By taking action to protect the right to food, governments in the MENA region can help to ensure that everyone has access to the food they need to live a healthy and productive life.
